Key Takeaways
- Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Rise of the Ronin headline the PS Plus Extra catalog for July 2026, and both are massive open-world time sinks.
- The second wave lands July 28 with Dying Light, Citizen Sleeper 2, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind, and Snow Bros. Wonderland.
- Premium subscribers get two PS2 deep cuts, Psi-Ops and Indigo Prophecy. Download Psi-Ops first. Trust me on this one.

Sony dropped the full PS Plus game catalog for July and this is one of the better months in a while. Two legit open-world blockbusters, a solid zombie classic, and a couple of PS2 oddballs I never thought I’d see on modern hardware. If you’re paying for Extra or Premium, this month actually justifies the bill.
The Two Big Ones
Rise of the Ronin hit the catalog on July 15, so it’s sitting there waiting for you right now. Team Ninja’s open-world samurai game got a lukewarm reception at launch, but I think it’s aged into one of the more underrated PS5 exclusives. The combat is the star. Once the parry timing clicks, every duel feels like a fight you earned. The open world itself is standard checklist stuff, but the fighting carries it.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is the one I’m pointing at, though. It lands July 21, which is tomorrow if you’re reading this the day I posted it. I slept on this game at launch because seventy bucks for what looked like Far Cry in a Na’vi costume felt steep. At the price of already-paying-for-Plus? Completely different math. And here’s the thing: it really is Far Cry with bow and arrows, but it’s the best-looking game Ubisoft has ever shipped. Flying a banshee over Pandora at sunset does something to your brain. Sometimes pretty is enough.
Firefighting Simulator: Ignite also arrives July 21. I have nothing profound to say about a firefighting sim except that these jank-adjacent simulator games are always weirdly fun for exactly one weekend, and that’s what a subscription catalog is for.
The July 28 Wave
The back half of the month is stacked too. On July 28 the catalog adds Dying Light (the PS4 original), Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind, and Snow Bros. Wonderland.
Dying Light is the headline here. Ten-plus years later, the first-person parkour-and-zombies loop still works, and the day-night cycle is still one of the great tension machines in gaming. Nighttime in Harran remains genuinely stressful in a way most modern horror games can’t touch.
Citizen Sleeper 2 is the sneaky pick of the whole month. It’s a dice-driven sci-fi RPG that plays like a tabletop session with a great DM. If you want something you can play in bed on a catalog Kotaku called home to “two very big open-world games,” this is the palate cleanser between them.
And Rita’s Rewind is a love letter to 90s beat-em-ups with a Power Rangers skin. It knows exactly what it is.
The PS2 Deep Cuts
Premium members get Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy and Indigo Prophecy on July 21, and this is where I get nostalgic. Psi-Ops was the game where you flung dudes across rooms with telekinesis in 2004 and it felt like witchcraft. I rented it three separate times back in the day, which in 2004 economics meant I basically bought it.
Indigo Prophecy is David Cage before Heavy Rain made him a household name. The first half is one of the best interactive thrillers ever made. The second half goes completely off the rails in a way I refuse to spoil. Play it just to experience the moment the wheels come off.
What I’d Download First
My order: Rise of the Ronin tonight, Avatar tomorrow, then clear space for the July 28 wave. Quick reminder that the game catalog only comes with Extra and Premium tiers. Essential subscribers don’t get any of this, which continues to make Essential a tough sell.
Fair warning if you’re diving into two giant open-world games back to back: that’s hundreds of hours of stick drift risk. My launch DualSense finally gave out during a long RPG stretch this year, so if yours is getting crunchy, a backup DualSense controller is a smart pickup before you’re 40 hours deep on Pandora.
If you’re building out the rest of your PS5 setup, I covered the Pulse Elite headset earlier this year and it pairs great with exactly this kind of open-world month. And if you’re curious how the other side is eating, Xbox’s July Game Pass drop was strong too, though it came with some ugly news attached.
