In-Depth Look at Call of Duty: Black Ops Multiplayer

Check out this hour long video from Gamespot featuring the ins and outs of the multiplayer in Call of Duty: Black Ops

Interesting Things I Noticed In The Video:

  • Easter Eggs hidden in maps (shoot all the heads off the mannequins in Nuke Town for a surprise, double rainbow in NukeTown, Nuke destroys town at the end of each game)
  • Map Voting – Like Halo: Reach, once a match is over the group can vote on the next map from a series of 3 (as far as I could tell).
  • No Commando, danger close, one man army or stopping power and no death streaks, but there is still lightweight and marathon – Full List of Perks
  • Maps are interactive – Sign in Nuke Town that tells you how many players are currently in Nuke Town, rocket in Launch actually fires off.
  • Kill Streak Rewards DO NOT count towards kill streak rewards – So you can’t use a predator to get a harrier to get a chopper gunner, etc.
  • Care Packages will contain rare special weapons/killstreaks not available normally (obviously it’ll be rare to get these items).
  • Wager Matches look fun as hell!
  • Ridiculous levels of customization
  • Player skins change based on Perks not based on weapons.
  • Sections are unlocked via leveling up, but the actual items within those sections are then purchased with CoD Points, not unlocked with levels or challenges. (Example: Level XX unlocks the Perks section, but then it costs $XXXX for each perk)
  • Supposedly Quick Scoping has been removed from the game, based on previous chats with the developers, but in the video one of the players appears to quick scope another (could have just been luck). Just read that the scope will not auto-center when you scope-in like it did in MW2, which is how they are combating quick scoping. So you’ll have to readjust when you scope in now…. thank god.
  • Dogs and Poison Gas are back
  • “Classified” guns have special requirements in order to unlock (Example: Purchase 7 items within the Assault Rifle group to unlock)
  • You can pick up any equipment and reposition it (including claymores) – Info not found in video but rather on JD_2020 ‘s twitter (he’s the community manager for Treyarch)
  • Custom games that you create can be saved to the community file share so anyone can download your game settings and play them. You can limit anything from time limit and score, all the way to weapons, attachments and perks… this is going to be sick!
  • Barebones modes as well as normal and hardcore modes.

Ability: Allows you to move faster, but how fast depends on the equipped weapons mobility. This should be used with a “run and gun” class due to the added speed.
Pro Ability: When equipped, this enables you to fire faster after sprinting.

Ability: Replenishes your ammunition and lethal grenades when you walk over blue scavenger bags that are dropped by dead players. This won’t resupply launchers or equipment. Scavenger is very useful with weapons that run out of ammo quickly.
Pro Ability: Doubles your starting ammo with extra magazines.

Ability: Ghost works pretty much like Cold Blooded from Modern Warfare 2, but it doesn’t make you invisible to infrared scopes. You are undetectable by the Spy Plane and Blackbird killstreaks when you have this equipped. You only show up on the radar if you fire a weapon that doesn’t have a silencer.
Pro Ability: no red crosshair or name when targeted

Flak Jacket
Ability: Flak Jacket greatly reduces explosive damage and allows you to survive any indirect explosive attack. Explosive crossbow bolts are lethal if they get stuck on you and explode.
Pro Ability: Reduces fire damage and allows you to reset the fuse of a thrown grenade when you pick it up. (Confirmed by “Vahn”, Treyarch MP Design Director)

Ability: Reduces the amount of kills required for any killstreak by one. For example, the Care Package normally requires 5 kills, but if you have Hardline equipped you only need 4 kills.
Pro Ability: Allows you to randomly choose another reward from a Care Package. When you open a Care Package, you can either take the reward or try again for something better.

For example, when selecting a Care Package and you get the Spy Plane killstreak reward, you get the following option: “Hold X for Spy Plane OR Double Tap to Try Again”


Ability: Increases your weapons bullet penetration, but it doesn’t increase bullet damage. This is pretty much like Deep Impact from Call of Duty 4 and FMJ weapon attachment from Modern Warfare 2.
Pro Ability: bullets do extra damage to aircraft and turrets. reduced recoil when you are shot

Ability: Enables you to hold your breath longer when steadying a weapons scope. Scout offers a significant advantage to sniper class weapons.
Pro Ability: reduces weapon sway while aiming through a sniper scope

Steady Aim
Ability: Steady Aim increases a weapons hip fire accuracy and also reduces shotgun spread. This should be used with the Dual Wield attachment, since Dual Wield significantly reduces a weapons hip fire accuracy.
Pro Ability: (Classified)

Sleight of Hand
Ability: Gives a faster reload time by reducing your weapons reload time in half. This is extremely useful with weapons that have long reload times, like shotguns and light machine guns.
Pro Ability: Allows you to aim down the sight ~50% faster than normal. This doesn’t work with sniper class weapons anymore like in the previous Call of Duty games.

Ability: This is the equivalent of Bling from Modern Warfare 2. Warlord allows you to put 2 attachments to your primary weapon. Stealth classes should use this since they can equip a silencer to remaining undetected and still reap the benefits of having a second attachment.
Pro Ability: You can also put 2 attachments to your secondary weapon.


Ability: This extends your sprint time, but it doesn’t increase your speed. Marathon does not give you unlimited sprint like it does in Modern Warfare 2.
Pro Ability: no fall damage

Ability: Ninja allows you to walk, sprint and jump almost silently, therefore you can sneak behind enemies more easily. This is the equivalent of Dead Silence from Call of Duty 4.
Pro Ability: move through motion sensors and camera spikes undetected

Second Chance
Ability: Gives you the ability to survive a normal death by dropping you to the ground. You can use your pistol to defend yourself from enemies. Second Chance ends after 10 seconds or if you take a single hit from the enemy, and in both cases, you will die.

If you have Second Chance equipped, any teammate can revive you – even players that don’t have Second Chance. You can see a white REVIVE tag above a player that can be revived.
Pro Ability: use equipment

Ability: Allows you to see enemy explosives, equipment and Tactical Insertions. This highlights them with a red color like SitRep from Modern Warfare 2.
Pro Ability: This is one of the most interesting additions to the whole Black Ops perks list. Hacker Pro actually allows you to booby trap enemy Care Packages and also turn enemy killstreaks and equipment friendly.

Tactical Mask
Ability: Tactical Mask reduces the effects of flashbangs and concussion grenades. It’s currently unknown if the mask reduces your visibility.
Pro Ability: night vision goggles

Escape death 5 times after being shot
Get 15 melee kills
Get 10 offense medals by killing ops near their objectives

Scavenger Challenges:
Get 2 kills without dying
Get 10 lethal grenade kills with resupplied grenades
Resupply 150 times with scavenger

Ghost Challenges:
Destroy 30 aircraft without killstreaks
Destroy 5 sentry guns
Kill 20 enemies while their spy plane or blackbird is up

Flak Jacket:
Plant/defuse 10 bombs in demolition
Survive 10 explosions
Throw back 5 enemy grenades

Earn and call in attack dogs
Get a 7 killstreak
Share 10 care packages with teammates

Get 30 kills through walls
Destroy 10 pieces of enemy equipment through walls
Shoot 200 bullets into enemy aircraft

Get 30 headshots
Get 50 one shot one kills
Get 50 kills with secondary weapons

Steady Aim:
Get 150 hip-fire kills
Melee 2 enemies consecutively 3 times
Get 100 kills after sprinting

Sleight of Hand:
Get 150 kills while ADS
Reload and finish off the enemy you wounded 10 times (shoot, reload, kill X10)
Kill an enemy within 5 seconds of reloading 30 times

Get 25 frag or semtex kills
Get 5 multi-kills with grenades
Get 150 kills using guns with two attachments

Capture 15 flags
Get first blood 10 times
Run 26 miles using marathon

Get 15 backstabber medals
Plant the bomb in search and destroy 10 times
Get 150 kills using the suppressor attachment

Second Chance:
Get 3 headshot kills in second chance
Get 20 kills in second chance
In second chance, kill the guy who downed you 5 times

Destroy 25 equipment or explosives using hacker
Kill an enemy with claymores or c4 25 times
Kill 25 enemies within jammer or motion sensor radius

Tactical Mask:
Kill 20 enemies that are stunned by your concussion grenade
Kill 20 flashbanged enemies by your flashbang
Kill 20 enemies poisoned by your nova gas


Team Deathmatch will return; however, points for headshots and other bonuses will be added to the team’s score.
