call of duty black ops first strike impressions

Since Chicago was basically shutdown yesterday I had a lot of time to get to know the First Strike DLC for Black Ops so I figured it was only fitting to give a quick rundown of what I think of each map so far. If you haven’t already done so, jump on Xbox Live and pick up the DLC for 1200 Microsoft Points ($15). The map pack includes 4 all-new multiplayer maps along with 1 new zombie map. Once you get a chance to play around with them a bit let us know how you feel about them in the comments.

Kowloon

This is probably my favorite of the new map. I like the fact that it feels small, but it’s actually a decent size map. There are tons of places to hide, lots of windows and stuff to snipe out of and tons of different ways to get across the map… like the ziplines, which are actually pretty pointless. All the teaser videos that Treyarch put together made the ziplines out to be these huge advantage in getting across the map if you were lucky enough to not get shot, but honestly they are pretty pointless. You can jump out the window and run to the end of the zipline faster than the zipline goes and you can shoot while doing so, which you can’t do on the zipline. While it is cool to have some interactivity with the map, it’s still pointless. If you do plan on using the ziplines just make sure that you don’t get stuck on one when the game stops to try and find a new host. When it comes back you’ll be stuck and unable to move until someone kills you (happened to us yesterday). But overall I love the look and feel of this map, the rain and lighting add a lot to the environment and while I don’t really get that much of the feeling of being on top of buildings, you can still fall off so be careful.

Stadium

This is a smaller map and actually could be comparable to Nuketown, but it doesn’t feel that way. I’d actually be curious to know the exact dimensions of this map compared to Nuketown’s just to see how they compare. Basically you’re fighting in the courtyard of a hockey stadium, sure you can go into the actual stadium, but you can’t go on the ice and you’re limited to one end of it so that’s kind of lame. I don’t dislike the map, but it’s definitely my least favorite of all 4 of them. I have a love/hate relationship with the different levels within the map, meaning that I like being able to get up to a high window or ledge and pick people off, but when I get picked off from up there I hate it! There aren’t very many long sight views so it keeps most action to short distances which is cool, but like I said, it’s my least favorite of the new maps.

Discovery

A nice big snow map that seems a lot smaller than it is, with snow bridges you can blow up… Discovery is my 2nd least favorite map in the pack only because I don’t really care for snow maps. The map itself looks great and plays pretty well, I just don’t really like the snow maps for some reason. It’s big enough, yet isn’t just wide open so it seems smaller than it is. Plenty of buildings and stuff to go into and around, but not too many that you can’t find anyone. I will say that the destructible snow bridges are kind of lame. The main one they show off in the teaser videos hardly ever gets used. Honestly, I’ve only gone down there maybe 2 times just to check it out. That’s not to say that there aren’t other bridges you can blow up, but that main one isn’t really a game changing spot in the map from what I’ve experienced. I can see myself skipping this one a lot in the future, but it’s still new so I’ll continue to let it grow on me.

Berlin Wall

My 2nd favorite map next to Kowloon… and I don’t even snipe! This map is a snipers dream. Tons of buildings with access to the upper floors, long sight lines, good choke points… this map is a well rounded, large map. I like the idea of No Mans Land in the middle because it creates certain choke points where you have to cross sides. This makes for some interesting battles in the middle as well as some brave souls trying to cross before the auto turrets rip them to shreds. I like this map a lot just for the fact that there are lots of places to go into and around and even though the buildings offer a haven for campers, there are always multiple ways to get into most buildings so you can sneak up on them unnoticed.

I’ll be honest, I’m not really a Zombies mode person, but I did give Ascension a try and thought it was the best of any of the other zombie maps I’ve played so far. There just seems to be a lot going on and a lot of places to run around. I definitely suck at this mode by myself so I only made it to level 4 before I got frustrated and left, but I’m sure those of you that are hardcore Zombie players are loving this map.

So what do you guys think of the new maps? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter (@acslaterx)

agree on stadium… first thing i did was try to go on the ice and was let down… shouldn’t even be called stadium imo, as you don’t even get to play in there. They definitely dropped the creative ball on there. Would be great if B (domination) was in the middle of the ice.

Glad I’m not the only one who doesn’t really care for it. I also think B is in a weird place as it is. I get that it’s the middle of the map, but it seems way too easy to camp the flag from multiple angles. At least on Nuketown you can’t really see B from the windows of the houses… in Stadium you have balcony/lookouts on either side directly next to B, not to mention the scaffolding by the actual arena… Maybe it’s just me and I haven’t figured out the best way yet, but it seems a little one sided, but oh well I’m enjoying the map pack as a whole so no complaints there.
