Call of Duty: Black Ops Escalation DLC Impressions

black ops escalation dlc impressions

I’m going to be honest, I haven’t had a chance to try the “Call of the Dead” zombie map that was included in the Escalation map pack DLC that was just released on the Xbox 360, but I have played all 4 of the other maps so I wanted to give my quick impressions of each of them. And as far as the zombie map goes, I’ve never played any of the zombie maps anyways so I’m probably the last person you want giving you impressions of the new one. So with that being said, let’s talk about the 4 new multiplayer maps!

It’s already painfully obvious which map people are probably playing the most and that’s hotel. It seems as though everytime this map comes up in the rotation it’s instantly voted for by almost everyone. I like the map, it’s big and has a nice balance between inside and outside environments as well as a few good vantage points for sniping. Each side of the hotel has it’s own “suite” overlooking the center pool area, so there are good sniping points on each side which makes running through the very center a bit more difficult, but don’t worry there are plenty of paths around the sides to get from place to place. I also like how there are lots of things going on within each of the hotels, whether that’s elevators or a casino that’s built like a maze, there’s plenty of places to hide and plenty of places to sneak up on people. So while Hotel is not my personal favorite of the map pack, it’s definitely an enjoyable map.

My least favorite of the maps so far has got to be Convoy, but if you based it on what people vote for each round, Stockpile seems to be the clear loser so far (even though I enjoy it). I just don’t like the walkways that go over the street on either side. It’s not a bad map in comparison to something like Stadium (which I can’t stand most of the time), but it’s my least favorite of these new maps. It may just be because I was getting absolutely destroyed trying to take “B” in domination yesterday so I’ll have to try some other game modes, but right now it’s my least favorite.

On the other end of the spectrum, I love Zoo. I love the fact that there is so much going on and it’s a huge map. There are tons of levels and buildings to run into, plant a claymore and leave. The “B” flag is, again, sandwiched between 2 higher overlooks, but in this map it seems better than in Convoy for some reason. I really just like the fact that you have to be on your toes because there’s so many corners and so many places for people to be hiding. There’s no really long lines of sight so it leads to more close quarter firefights, which I like.

Last, but not least, is Stockpile. I’ve only played this map a few times because it seems like people never vote for it. I actually really like it. It reminds me of some of the older CoD maps from World at War and even a couple from CoD2. It’s kind of like Zoo in that it’s a large map, but there’s lots of stuff going on so there are plenty of places to hide and sneak up on people. It also doesn’t have the long sight lines which lead to less sniper fire and more close combat. The automatic doors in the center building are a cool touch, but I like how it doesn’t completely close of the building which would have totally thrown off the balance.

So overall I’m very happy with the map pack and if Treyarch is supporting Black Ops like they did World at War, I can’t wait for the 3rd DLC to come out in another 6 months or so. So what do you guys think of the maps? How’s the zombie map that I haven’t tried yet?
