Swarm by Foursquare – First Impressions

swarm app by foursquare

Foursquare has decided that they needed to split their app into two different business models. The Foursquare app itself will now be for finding places nearby to eat, drink, shop, whatever. The new app, Swarm, will be for seeing what your friends are up to, where they are at and planning meet-ups. I don’t get it…

I mainly use Foursquare for getting deals at restaurants and for seeing where my friends were, I rarely ever used it for finding a place to eat. Really, the only thing I used the tips section for was finding out what the wifi password was at any given restaurant. If I wanted to find reviews about the food at a particular place I normally just defaulted to Yelp or, in the case of overseas travel, trip advisor.

I will say that I like the Swarm app itself. I like the home screen being your friends, how far they are from you, where they are, what they are doing, etc. That part of it is cool. However, I don’t see why they had to split this out from Foursquare itself? Seems like an odd choice to me. I’ll probably only use the Swarm app from here on out, rather than Foursquare, but it’s a little annoying that I’ll have to launch Foursquare to find out the wifi password at different places now…

Does anyone have anymore incite as to why they made this change? Do you guys like the splitting of the features?

Swarm is available for iOS and Android
