It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia: The Gang Tries Desperately to Win an Award Recap

A Charlie song, Frank getting a bottle shoved up his ass and Oscar from The Office… another solid episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia this week.

Frank is confused as to why Paddy’s is never even on the ballot for best bar in Philadelphia and vows to get to the bottom of it. The gang goes down to the editorial that judges the bars and confronts the guy in charge to try to and not-so subtly bribe him into getting them on the ballot. Turns out anyone can be on the ballot and it only costs $10, but apparently whenever the form was sent to Paddy’s it just came back with racist remarks written on it. Knowing at it only costs $10, Frank opens his briefcase only to be blasted in the face with blue ink that the other guys rigged up inside. They had intended for the judge to open it because they thought he would find it funny…

With their name now on the ballot (I think) the gang heads down to Suds, the bar that was named best bar in Philadelphia the previous year. They have a seat at the bar and immediately start acting like idiots, although the bartenders and staff at Suds all seem like a bunch of tools and I would never go to a bar like Suds. Either way, the bartender tells them about their signature fishbowl drink that comes with 3 straws, so naturally Dennis, Mac and Dee order one each. By the end of the fishbowls they are starting to really like Suds and decide to take the same playful banter back to Paddy’s.

While the banter between the bartenders and servers at Suds might have worked there, it definitely doesn’t work at Paddy’s where Mac immediately gets defensive after Dennis playfully insults him. Things clearly aren’t going to work, but never fear, Charlie has written a song about Paddy’s that he thinks people will like. It’s actually a very soft, very tame, nice song about the bar which would be perfect, but the rest of the guys hate it and lock him in the basement.

With nothing to lose they decide to host an industry night at Paddy’s and invite all of the employees from the local bars for the night, including the manager of Suds, played by Oscar from The Office. The industry night could not have gone worse. Mac and Dee are trying to play the exact same characters that they saw at Suds to no avail, while Dennis is trying to make sure things go smoothly, which of course they don’t.

When things start to go down hill they decide to give Frank’s burlesque room a shot, which upon entering they find Artemis jamming a bottle up Frank’s ass… clearly not something that will get them voted best bar in Philadelphia. Meanwhile Charlie has escaped the basement and is crawling through the bar with paint all over his face. He’s clearly high, but makes his way over to the piano to sing his new song aptly titled “Go Fuck Yourselves”. The song ends with Charlie spitting at all of the people in the bar and Mac, Dennis and Dee take that as a sign to start doing the same.

Needless to say the gang is not going to be winning any awards in the near future, but it does make for some damn good entertainment. So far this season is shaping up to be pretty solid for the sunny crew. Hopefully the creativity and humor continue through the rest of the season.

Here’s the synopsis for next week’s episode

Mac and Dennis Buy a Timeshare

The gang does their best to recoup their investments in questionable schemes by dumping their losses on Ben the soldier while trying to avoid being duped again by whatever mastermind is pulling their strings.
