Sunday’s House of the Dragon hit different. I’ve complained plenty about this show slow walking its way through season 3, but episode 4, “Tumbleton,” is the one where it finally remembered it’s supposed to be a tragedy, not a chess match.
What Actually Happened in Tumbleton
Ormund Hightower marched his army into Tumbleton and took the town, and honestly the show doesn’t fully explain why he’d bother with a location that doesn’t seem strategically worth the trouble. Rhaenyra says as much out loud, and I was glad the show let her say it instead of pretending it was obvious. Meanwhile Criston Cole and Gwayne Hightower finally roll up to Harrenhal expecting to find Aemond, and he’s nowhere to be found. That’s a storm that’s building somewhere off screen and I don’t love how long the show is taking to let it land.
The NPR recap called this the episode where the season finally begins, and I get why. Four episodes in, the pieces are finally moving instead of just getting described.
Daemon’s Choice Was the Best Scene of the Season
The real meat of the episode is Daemon finding his daughter Rhaena hiding in a cave with Sheepstealer, the dragon everyone assumes killed Jace at the Gullet. Rhaena won’t come back to face Rhaenyra. She wants to sit in that cave and rot out of guilt instead.
Daemon’s answer to that problem is the most Daemon thing he’s ever done. He kills a random shepherd, burns the body, and passes off the charred remains as Sheepstealer’s mystery rider so nobody comes looking for his daughter. Then he walks into King’s Landing and hands Rhaenyra a lie with a straight face.
I’ve watched this character do a lot of impulsive, violent things over three seasons, but this one lands different because it’s not about ambition or ego. It’s a dad protecting his kid, even though the method is monstrous. Rhaenyra calls him out for the murder, and the show does this great bit where you realize scolding Daemon for impulsive violence is “a bit like rebuking the sun for shining.” That’s exactly right. This is who he’s always been. The tragedy is that this time it’s almost sympathetic.
Mysaria isn’t buying the story for a second either, and you can feel that lie sitting in the room like a bomb with a long fuse. That’s the stuff this show does best, when a secret gets planted and you just wait for it to detonate three episodes later.
Rhaenyra Is Losing the Realm Before She Loses the War
The quieter thread running through “Tumbleton” is Rhaenyra realizing her grip on the smallfolk is slipping even as her military situation gets more complicated. She looks exhausted in every scene, and that’s the point. Ruling from a place of grief and anxiety is its own slow motion disaster, separate from whatever is happening on the battlefield.
If you haven’t caught up, go read my take on episode 3’s Daeron twist from last week, and I broke down the bigger picture in my season 3 review too. This is a show that rewards knowing the small details, which is also why I keep going back to Fire & Blood on my nightstand between episodes. It’s wild how much context that book adds to scenes the show only gets to gesture at.
New episodes drop weekly on HBO and HBO Max, Sundays at 9pm ET, and the season has four more to go. Based on how “Tumbleton” ended, I don’t think we’re getting a slow back half.
