Winning Was the Easy Part

Two weeks ago Rhaenyra took the Iron Throne, and I said in my season 3 review that the show finally felt like it was delivering on the Dance of the Dragons. Episode 3 is where the bill comes due. She has the chair. She also has a starving city, an empty treasury, and a room full of nobles who bent the knee with their fingers crossed.

This is the stuff I love about this universe when it’s working. Game of Thrones was never really about who wins the battle, it was about what winning costs. Watching Rhaenyra spend a whole episode learning that ruling is a grind, not a coronation, is the show trusting its own material. NPR’s recap called it heavy hangs the head that wears the wig, and honestly, that’s the episode.

Emma D’Arcy is doing quietly great work here too. Rhaenyra is starting to harden into someone you barely recognize from season 1, and the show isn’t spelling it out with speeches. You just see it in how she holds the room.

The Daeron Twist

Now the good stuff. Daemon rides to Ormund Hightower with a clean offer: bend the knee, hand over young Daeron Targaryen, and everybody keeps their heads. Ormund appears to take the deal. A boy is delivered. Everyone exhales.

Except the kid is a fake. Ormund coerced some poor child into dyeing his hair Targaryen silver and playing prince, while the real Daeron stays tucked away in his care. When the reveal landed I actually said “oh, that’s good” out loud to an empty room.

Here’s why it works for me. This show’s twists usually come from dragons or prophecy. This one is pure politics. It’s a con, executed by a guy everyone underestimated, and it instantly makes Ormund the most interesting antagonist on the board. No dragon required. That’s the show at its best.

The Season 3 trailer promised the throne knows no mercy. Episode 3 delivered on it.

Tumbleton Changes Everything

The episode closes with Rhaenyra learning the full picture. Ormund hasn’t just kept Daeron, he’s taken the town of Tumbleton in the Reach and is holding its people hostage. And there’s a young dragon there too.

Book readers just sat up straight, because Tumbleton is a name that carries weight in the source material. I won’t spoil what Fire and Blood does with that town, but if the show is even half faithful to it, we are headed somewhere brutal.

So here’s the setup: Rhaenyra can’t feed her own capital, her enemies figured out she can be fooled, and the next move probably requires dragons over a town full of civilians. Every option is bad, which in this show means the storytelling is very good. Episode 4 lands Sunday, July 12, and for the first time in a while I’ll be watching live instead of waiting for the recap cycle to guilt me into it.
