We at Acslater.com love us some Shout! Factory releases, well I do at least, because this is the third one I have done and I have enjoyed them all! They have released some of our childhood favorites in; Transformers, Xmen and well G.I. Joe! So here I will be talking a little bit about the Shout! Factory/Hasbro release of; G.I. Joe: Renegades Season 1 Volume 1.
“Branded as renegades for crimes they didn’t commit, a group of young heroes is forced to turn fugitive as they battle to clear their names and expose the evil that is Cobra”. This 13 episode collectors DVD follows Duke, Scarlett, Roadblock, Tunnel Rat, Ripcord, Breaker and Snake Eyes, as they try and dismantle the evil plots of the COBRA organization. A lot, well hopefully most, of us grew up with the Saturday morning cartoons version of the GI Joes! This is a more updated version of course, but follows the same concept as the original series, good vs evil. After watching this, I got the feeling this was like a prequel to the beginning of the Joe’s. It shows how COBRA got their finances and how they (COBRA) came into its own, as well as how the Joe’s met and formed their alliance. So whether or not that was the intention, that is what I got.
I did not expect crisp animation on this, so in all reality it is what I thought it would be. Its fine for what it is, giving you that cartoon feel. The characters are “blockie” in form, but pretty well drawn for the content. The video comes at you in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen. There are few times during action scenes where you will see a blur, but over all as I stated its well drawn enough to be passable! 3.5/4
The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Stereo. I had no problems with the audio on my system. It was a pretty clear presentation during action scenes, with a good balance between the sounds of the weapons, voices and background music to the point where one never out did the other. The weapon sounds are crisp, with a StarWars feel, being they are mostly all laser guns! 4/5
Overall I really enjoyed this release, and would recommend it to all G.I. Joe fans, old and new. The story line was pretty captivating to the fact that before I knew it the DVD was over! The run time is +/-5 hours, so its a decently long RT for the first volume. There was a lack of special features, but I don’t know what they could really make out of the first volume other than interviews with the voice over characters. Speaking of the characters, they were pretty funny at times, and the villains of course just a small obstacle for these butt kickers! I read that they were not doing a season 2 or this series which is kind of sad, but that’s TV these days! I hope we get more Shout! Factory releases. I really enjoy them, and I hope you all enjoy them too! So until the next one, I hope you enjoyed this review, and check back regularly. A special thanks to the people over at Shout!. 4/5
