Astro – “Show Me What You Got” – The X Factor Tom November 23, 2011 Music, Other Clips, TV It’s nice to see Astro realize that he was wrong last week and then come out this week and absolutely kill it once again. I still stand by the fact that he’s a little cocky, but you know what, at least he has the talent to back it up so I can’t hate on him for that. His performance this week was a “re-imagining” of Jay-Z’s “Show Me What You Got” which uses the original Pharrell Williams beat from “Rump Shaker”. The 2nd verse where he shouts out a handful of states, cities and countries of his fans is incredible. I still can’t believe this kid is only 15. And as with the last couple weeks, I’ve transcribed the lyrics to Astro’s performance below, check it out. If I made any mistakes please let me know in the comments. I see a lot of people commenting on other articles about the fact that he doesn’t sing, he shouldn’t be in a singing competition, blah blah blah. If this were a straight up singing competition it would be the same as American Idol, This is X Factor, that’s the point, the rules are different. I understand if you’re not a fan of hip-hop, most of America isn’t, but you can’t deny that the kid is talented. Can some of the other contestants sing better than Astro, of course, but if you ask me it takes more talent to write your own lyrics week after week and make them sound like a song you could hear on the radio, then to just cover someone elses song. I saw a couple articles/comments saying that Astro could just be making up his lyrics on the spot and we don’t even know if he can memorize a song. Well that’s just laughable. First of all if you listen to the actual words you can tell they are well thought out and written down. Second of all, if these were just spit from the top of his head that would make him that much more incredible. Do you not realize how hard it is to come up with something that creative off the top of your head, on the spot? Try it once, let us know how it goes… To say this kid shouldn’t be on this show or isn’t talented is ridiculous. I understand that everyone may not like him, or think he’s just a cocky ass kid that needs to learn some respect and manners, but there is no way you can deny that the kid has star qualities. He’ll grow out of his immaturity, I mean for god sake, the kid’s only 15 years old, what were you doing at 15. I can tell you right now I was a punk little brat at 15, but I grew up. Give the kid a break and let him be a kid, we all made mistakes at that age and you learn from them. I promise you this kid isn’t going anywhere and all the bad publicity that came from last week is just going to make his fans vote for him 100 times over, so get ready to see a lot more of this “arrogant, cocky, disrespectful hip-hop kid from brooklyn”, cause he’s not going anywhere anytime soon. You know how on Idol, Simon used to say thing like “you are in a whole different level” to people who had good performances? Astro really IS on a whole different level. It’s a huge shame that putting him in the bottom two last week backfired so badly, and I only can hope that his fan base rallied this week. I don’t think he can win. But then again, Bo Bice didn’t win season 4 of Idol, but he came in and changed the game for good. You don’t have to win to change the game. But you do have to last to at least the top 5 before so that viewers can get used to the new and the different, and look forward to more of it come the next year. AC Slater I agree that I don’t really think he’s going to win, just based on the overall views that America has on hip-hop vs singing in this type of competition, but in my eyes he’s already won. He’s impressed countless number of people, LA Reid being one of them, so you know there’s going to be some producer, executive, whoever that will want to work with him after the show is over if he doesn’t win. The kid just needed the show to show the world what he is capable of and he’s already won in those regards, so whether he wins or loses he’ll do just fine in the music industry and I have no doubt that he’ll have a long career. And as much as I’d hope for this to open up some of these competitions to hip-hop, I think we’re still going to see the same old karaoke type singing shows that we have, but at least people know now that there is talent outside of just singing… and yes, being able to rap is definitely a talent that most people don’t have.
