America’s Best Dance Crew Season 4 Week 2

My overall plan was not to blog every single episode of America’s Best Dance Crew, but my post on the season premier generated some good comments so I decided to keep it going. Like I said before, my predictions for the season last week were only based on one episode, so obviously things could change. It’s very hard to judge the groups based on 1 episode of a show where 1 episode could easily make or break you. So with that in mind let’s get to the crews.

The theme of this weeks dances was Beyonce. Each group was assigned a Beyonce song that utilizes a certain type of dance or dance move in the video. The episode started off with Mario Lopez weeding out a couple of the groups that were safe and would be appearing next week for sure. To me it was no surprise which groups were the first 2 to make it through to next week, “We Are Heroes” and “Rhythm City”. Based on both groups performances last week there was no way either of them were going to be in the bottom 2 this week.

We Are Heroes was the first group to perform and they were given “Single Ladies”. Like last week, these girls did very well for themselves. They utilized the dance moves that the challenge called for and were extremely clean and tight throughout most of the performance. The only thing I found a little weird and out of place was when the 3 girls went into the middle and made a heart with their arms and did some sort of isolation type deal in the middle of it. While it was a cool idea it just didn’t seem to flow as well with the rest of the performance. I really think this group was one of the best this week, but there’s still something about the tall Asian girl that bugs me. I think it’s just the fact that I’m not used to Asian’s being that tall, but she can dance her ass off. I stand by my prediction that these girls will be in at least the top 3.

Rhythm City was up next and they danced to Beyonce’s “Sweet Dreams”. I really liked these guys last week and still do after this week’s performance, but I don’t feel they were quite as good as last time. I liked the subtle nods to Michael Jackson and A Nightmare on Elm Street with the hands/faces coming through the wall above the bed, but the bed in general didn’t really work for me. The guy dancing on the bed seemed a little off just because of the bounce the mattress has to it, and the fact that he was higher than everyone the whole time kind of took the attention away from the group as a whole in my opinion. Still a solid routine and I didn’t see anything that makes me think they will not make the top 3 still as I previously predicted.

So after those 2 groups performed, Mario came back out and announced the next 2 groups that were safe and would be making it to next week. I was honestly a little surprised with 1 of the groups that made it through. Obviously there was no doubt that “Massive Monkees” would make it through. They are the most similar to the last 3 winners and put on a great performance last week. It was “Beat Ya Feet Kings” that surprised a little bit here. Obviously we don’t know if they were the 3rd, 4th or even 5th lowest group because they really only tell us the bottom 2, the order that the rest of the safe groups are announced really doesn’t necessarily mean that, that was the order they were in.

Massive Monkees were up first and danced to “Work It Out” and they were required to use a hula hoop in their performance. Honestly I may have gotten a little too excited about this group last week because this week they were just kinda ‘meh’. Don’t get me wrong they were still pretty good, but the routine itself seemed a little sloppy, they weren’t terribly creative with the hula hoops and the dance moves were a little elementary. Like the judges, I also liked the section where the 2 guys were on each side moving in and out of the hula hoops and the other 2 guys were in the middle moving themselves through each other in the same moves as the hula hoops, so that was pretty cool. I hope they step it up a little next week, I think the Beyonce challenges were a little hard for some groups that aren’t really used to this style of dance or doing these kinds of moves. As for my prediction as far as how far they would make it based on the 2 performances we’ve seen so far, while they are still a good group and I’d still pick them for top 3, I gotta say that We Are Heroes were much better than them tonight so it’s a toss up. (and yes I understand that it’s a little easier for girls to do some of the Beyonce moves).

Beat Ya Feet Kings came up next and performed to “Crazy In Love”. I wasn’t feeling this performance at all and I still stand by my statement that they should have been the ones to go home last week instead of Fr3sh. They were very sloppy in all of their movements and formations and overall the performance was kind of boring. Most of the other groups came out with a good amount of energy and looked like they were there to win, these guys just don’t come off as being a strong group. And along with the sloppiness, the dance moves themselves were fairly simple and not too entertaining to watch. I don’t know, I have a feeling these guys are going to be in the bottom 2 next week based on what we saw last week and this week compared to the other groups this week.

Mario now announced who the bottom 2 crews were and who would be sticking around for next week. Out of the remaining 4 crews, the 2 that were safe were Southern Movement and Vogue Evolution. And yes, I was a little surprised that Vogue Evolution made it through, as you can see by the predictions I made last week. But again, that was solely based on last weeks performances. As you will read in a minute, they definitely surprised me this week.

MTV Shows

Southern Movement‘s challenge song this week was the Destiny’s Child hit, “Jumpin Jumpin”. As far as tightness and cleanliness in a performance goes these guys were incredible tonight. Every single move was spot on and 100% clean. Everyone in the group was together and on point and I thought it was one of the best performances of the night. And after that performance they may have bumped Massive Monkees out of the top 3 for me, but it’s still early in the season and one routine can make or break you.

MTV Shows

Vogue Evolution was up next with their performance to “Deja Vu”. So last week I ragged on this group because I didn’t really care for the “vogue” style of dance that they did for their crew choice, but this week they definitely surprised me. Their moves were very clean and the performance itself was pretty entertaining. Now, I still don’t particularly care for this style of dance, but that’s not to say that it isn’t good. This week showed me that they can do more than just “vogue” and that there is potential here for some cool performances. So obviously they were not eliminated this week as I predicted last week (based on 1 performance) and I have to say I’m now gonna have to move them up to a top 5 finish. I still don’t think they have enough to win the whole thing, but after tonight I don’t think there’s any way they are going home next week.

So that leaves us with the bottom 2 crews for the week and taking “Vogue Evolution” out of the mix, these were the next 2 that I expected to leave, AfroBorike and Artistry In Motion.

MTV Shows

Artistry In Motion was given “Divas” and had to use a chain in their routine. I think it was a little unfair to give 2 of the groups actual props and the other groups just a dance move, props seem like they are very hard to work with as we saw in Massive Monkees and Artistry In Motion’s performances. I understood the concept of being chained in at the beginning and then capturing the rest of the group in the chains and breaking free at the end, but the overall performance was not very good. It was a little confusing because of all the close dancing which is probably due to the length of the chain, but it didn’t seem like they utilized the stage as much as they could. I didn’t really care for this performance at all and obviously I was not the only one.

MTV Shows

AfroBorike didn’t impress me at all last week, but definitely brought the energy this week. They were given “Beautiful Liar” this week which is very fitting seeing as how it features Shakira and her latin hips. This performance also surprised me and I’m kind of looking forward to seeing what they do next week. And like Shane said, I do appreciate the women in this group, definitely nice to have some eye candy up there shaking their hips. As far as predictions on how far they will go though, I feel like they are still weak compared to the other crews and while I feel “Beat Ya Feet Kings” are going to be the next group out, I don’t see these guys having the staying power of even a top 5 finish unless they really step it up next week.

So in the end the judges chose Artistry In Motion to leave the show and I definitely agree with them. Out of the bottom 2 crews this week, these guys were definitely the weaker of them. I still don’t agree that Beat Ya Feet Kings weren’t in the bottom 2, but like I said, I have a feeling they will be there next week with a good chance of going home. And that’s that, pretty good show overall. I think some of the groups may not have been as good as they could have been due to the fact that it was Beyonce week and some of the guys have a hard time doing some of those sexy moves that she does. And I also feel that the props were a little bit of an unfair advantage for those groups that didn’t have them, but hopefully it’s a more balanced challenge next week and we’ll get to see what some of these groups can really do.

So what did you guys think of this weeks performances? Were you surprised to see Artistry in Motion go home? Let’s get the comments going!
