I am not going to go through and rundown every thing that happened last night at the Grammy awards, but I did want to throw up a quick recap, along with my thoughts on a few things. First of all congratulations to Adele. She deserves to win all of the awards she won last night and even though I wanted to see Foo Fighters win album of the year I knew it wasn’t going to happen, for good reason. I was glad to see that Dave and the guys won for Best Rock Performance and took home 5 of the 6 Grammy’s they were nominated for, the only loss coming at the hands of Adele. Even if you’re not a fan of the Foo Fighers music, Grohl was right in that there’s something special about being recognized for an album that you recorded in your garage on a tape machine, with no use of computers. Which leads me into my next point…
What has happened to music today? I don’t get “Skrillex” or “Deadmau5″… David Guetta is up there too, but at least most of his recent music has other artists singing over it, but the “dub-step” stuff is dumb. I actually found Deadmau5 to be decent when the Foo Fighters were singing over it, but as soon as they stopped I had no desire to listen to the repetitive beats being played through a computer. I will say though, from an artistic/technological point-of-view, his mask from last night was pretty fucking cool. I didn’t mind the David Guetta portion of that performance with Chris Brown and Lil Wayne, but I still am not sure if Chris Brown can actually sing since I’ve never seen him not lip sync a performance. His Q-Bert inspired performance earlier in the night was actually quite boring to me even though I felt like I was going to have an epileptic seizure. And don’t even get me started on Nicki Minaj. I don’t mind her on a few tracks where she’s just a guest star and doesn’t do her stupid accents or “characters”, but I think her performance last night set female rappers back 30 years. Any progress that females have made in hip-hop over the years was instantly diminished by the fact that she was allowed to do that performance and “sing” that terrible song last night. Go back to guest spots and stop trying to one-up Lady Gaga (whom I also don’t really care for, but at least she has a good voice and decent songs).
There were obviously some good performances as well. Foo Fighters solo earlier in the night was great, even though I’m not a huge fan of Paul McCartney I can’t deny that he’s still got it, The Beach Boys with Maroon 5 and Foster the People was interesting… could have done without Maroon 5 and Foster the People, Taylor Swift was good, but I found it boring as I usually do when it comes to her, Jennifer Hudson singing Whitney Houston was great, and Adele was perfect as always. I’m sure there are others that I missed, but they don’t stand out in my mind so I’m not too worried about it.
So overall I thought the Grammys were a bit on the boring side, thankfully I was able to flip back and forth to The Walking Dead to make it a little more exciting, but overall I was bored. I don’t know why I continue to watch awards shows like this when year after year they continue to disappoint. I did think LL Cool J did a good job as the host despite a lot of people questioning why he would host the Grammys… I don’t know if it was just younger people questioning it, as they may only know him from NCIS or as an actor, but some people forget that he was/is one of the most influential people in hip-hop.
So what did you guys think of the show last night?
