Mini Movie Review: The Happening

M. Night Shamalamadingdong’s latest “thriller” that will captivate you and confuse you to no end, only to twist everything around at the end and blow your mind! I guess. I’ve enjoyed most of M. Night’s movies over the years, and I even enjoyed Unbreakable and The Village when most people didn’t. I did not like Lady in the Water, I just thought it was dumb, but it wasn’t the worst movie I’ve ever seen, I just wouldn’t recommend anyone to watch it if they are expecting a typical M. Night movie.

The movie is about some sort of virus or something that is causing people to lose control and eventually kill themselves. We follow Mark Wahlberg as he tries to get his wife, best friend and his best friend’s daughter out of the infected area. That is the basic plot of the movie. Now I didn’t find it terrible, it’s better than Lady in the Water, I just didn’t really like it. The death scenes are extremely cool and creative and very creepy at times, so that was a plus. Mark Wahlberg was in it, and I actually like him as an actor, but he didn’t seem right or comfortable in this role. I’m going to go out on a limb and say it was the dialogue that Shlamamalam wrote, but something didn’t seem right about it. I will tell you not to watch the “Mark Wahlberg Talks To Animals” skit from SNL before you see this movie, because that was all I was thinking about the whole time and it was making me crack up at points I shouldn’t have been.

*Spoilers Below Regarding The Ending*

After I watched it last night, I didn’t really like the ending, but after thinking about it for a little while this morning, it’s actually kind of a good idea, but I think it could have been executed better. The idea that the plant life in the world is finally sick of humans destroying the planet is kind of interesting. And the fact that the northeast section of the US was just a warning and that there is more to come in the future was pretty cool. I just feel there could have been a little more explaination or something, but maybe that would have taken away from the whole thing. M Night tries to be so mysterious with his movies that sometimes there’s just not enough for the audience to grasp on to.

If you’re a fan of his other movies you’re probably going to check this out anyways and like I said, it’s not the worst movie I’ve ever seen, but his past movies are much better and the acting is a little off in this one.
